Josh Shanks brings home Silver and personal bests in 3 events!
Ten athletes from the Saint John Track Club competed at this weekend’s National Legion Youth Championships in Ottawa.
Leading the NB team was young Josh Shanks of Chance Harbour competing for the first time at this event. On Saturday in the 2000m he showed a fantastic finishing kick to win the silver medal. Running strongly throughout the race including at times taking the lead, Josh hit the bell lap in the 3rd position only to outkick the next runner in the final 10 meters for the silver. His official time of 5.48.23 was a personal best by over 12 seconds and sets a new NB record for this event. The previous day Josh began the competition with a strong performance in the 1200m, finishing 5th in a personal best of 3.16.94 which shaved 5 seconds off his previous best. Not leaving it at that on Sunday Josh lined up for the 800m and ran a personal best time of 2.05.89 for 12th place beating his previous best by almost 3 seconds. Josh was NB’s only medal at this year’s meet.
Victoria Leblanc– In her first time at nationals she competed in the 200m and ran a personal best time of 27.83 and the long jump placing 8th with a jump of 4.87m which was another personal best.
NB relay Boys Team Sets provincial record:The under 16 boys 1600m Sprint Medley relay team made up of Seth Hadju, Pierre Dumouchel, Mathew McLaughlin and Nicoli Allen set a new provincial record at this event with a time of 3.45.05 for 4th. This relay consists of 2x200m, 1x400m, 1x800m legs.
Ben Fowler – Returning for his second time to nationals, Ben threw 43.04m in the javelin for 5th place and jumped 1.75m tying for 5th in the high jump.
Dan Brown – Competing in track and field for his first season and Dan took on the challenge of the multi-event Octathlon (8 events scored like a decathlon). He had a very strong competition over the two days doing personal bests in 6 of his events. Dan finished a very strong 6th with 4527 points beating his previous best and less than 200 points off of the medals.
Nick MacMackin – Nick returns for his 3rd time to the championship and now at the bottom of the youth age group. In the 800m he set a personal best time of 1.56.07 beating his previous best by over 1.4 seconds for a placing of 11th.
Katie Robinson – Katie returned for her second time to the nationals looking for personal best performances. She delivered in all cases improving her time in the 1500m to 5.02.92 and the 800m with a time of 2.26.63.
Pierre Dumouchel – Competed in the as part of the medley relay team running the 800m leg. His time in the of 3.19.27 in the 1200m was strong enough for 9th and a personal best by over 6 seconds.
Anthony Cormier – Competing for the first time at Legions Anthony placed 13th in the 300m in 38.75 s and 8th in the triple jump with 11.53m.
Jacob Hayes – Competing in the 100m Jacob ran an 11.71 and then two days later ran 24.19 in the 200m.
Liam Kettlewell – competing in the 100m and 300m hurdles with his times of 43.22 in the 300m being his best for the season.
Aug 6 2011 - Hershey North American - Sara Kean Wins Gold!
Sara Wins Gold at Hershey - 800m Age 13-14
Sara Kean finished off her strong season in style with a gold medal at the Hershey North American Championships on Saturday. Her time of 2.23.81 was fast enough for her to take the gold in a very strong field. Way to go Sara.

Brenna Kettlewell was a bronze medalist as a member of the Region 6 Girls 4x100m relay team. Great job girls.
