Jul 31 2015 - Maritime Track League - SJTC shows strong results

The first ever Maritime Track League concluded this past weekend at the Atlantic Track and Field Championships in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The meet saw the best athletes from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island compete at various meets throughout the summer in an effort to win prize money.

Athletes competed in the league by taking part in at least two designated MTL meets throughout the summer, and competing at the Atlantic Championships. Athletes' top three performances were matched up against the Canadian record in the event to give a score of how close they were to the Canadian record, with the best three scores winning money. First place in each division went away with $500, while second got $250, and third $150.

Josh Shanks (SJTC)  of Chance Harbour won the men's competition with a score of 151, while Joshua Lunda of Nova Scotia was second with a score of 148, and Pierre Landry of Saint-Louis-de-Kent third with a score of 145.

Victoria LeBlanc (SJTC) of Saint John won the women's competition with a score of 165, while Shannay Beal and Emma Edmonds, both of Nova Scotia, took the second and third positions with 162 points and 155 points, respectively.

Shayne Dobson of Campbellton won the para competition with a score of 571, while Christel Robichaud of Moncton was second with a score of 521. No third prize was given out for the para competition.

"For this being the first year of the Maritime Track League we must certainly say it was a success for both track and field in the Maritimes, but also a success for New Brunswick athletes," said Gabriel LeBlanc, Technical Director of Athletics New Brunswick. "NB athletes achieved 5 of the 8 positions in the league to win money, and they were certainly well deserved with their fantastic performances throughout the season."
