Dec 4 2014 - Cross Country Nationals
The National Cross Country Championships had more typical New Brunswick November weather than New Brunswick did! It was a snowy and cold day in Vancouver but we were ready for it. Taylor Dunn from the Saint John Track Club was first up and she did not see a need for a long sleeve or gloves. Her goal was top 30 and she surpassed that with a 24th finish out of 113 finishers in the youth category. She had the same time as 22nd and 23rd and was only 3 seconds out of a top 20 position! Taylor was especially proud of her 2nd lap of the 2K course. She finished very strong.
Coach Coffin was next and you could tell he was struggling to keep up as his "Paula Radcliffe" nod was out of control! By the third lap, he had moved up to 13th place and then hung on for 14th position on the last lap.
After cheering on Sarah McPherson in the senior women's race, the table was set for long-time SJTC all star Barry Britt in the senior men's race. Ryan Cassidy from Grand Digue had finished 4th in front of Barry's 5th place finish in 2013. This year, Barry ran to the front immediately and often led the field in the first half of the 10K. Ryan was in the chase pack early. As Chris Winter started to apply pressure at the front in the second half, Barry fell behind slightly. At the finish, Barry was only 19 seconds off Chris and 3 seconds behind 3rd place!! Behind Barry, Ryan had worked through the field and finished just 3 seconds behind Barry!! It was another historic 4-5 finish for New Brunswick in the senior men's event.
With next year's championships in closer Kingston, Coach Coffin is predicting a SJTC team performance that will outshine any other year with hopefully Taylor Dunn, Brady Graves, Josh Shanks, Barry Britt, Dean Strowbridge and Coach Coffin amongst others all taking part.
