Nov 27 2009 - National Cross Country Championships:

A master, a veteran and a pair of rookies from the Saint John Track Club are heading to Guelph, Ont. this weekend to compete in the 2009 Canadian Cross-Country Championship. Track club coach Alex Coffin will lead the Port City delegation and will have a dual role during Saturday's event. Coffin is competing in the Canadian Masters competition for athletes 35 years of age and up as well as coaching. Coffin said he's looking forward to the event as he hasn't run in the championship since 1998. "I think I'll actually have a chance to do well (in the event), but my focus is on the kids and coaching them," Coffin said. "I get to run the course first, so I'll be able to check it out and tell where the course is slick and what not." Hampton's Barry Britt is competing is his third Canadian Cross Country Championship while Matt McNeil of Saint John and Hampton's Grace Annear are competing in the event for the first time. Britt and McNeil will compete in the junior boys eight-kilometre race, something Britt feel favours his style of running. "I think it suits me better because I'm more of a longer distance guy," Britt said. "The more the distance goes up, the more it favours me or at least it has in the past. "I'm not a super fast guy in the shorter distances and I have the body type to be a good long distance runner." The Hampton native and member of Team New Brunswick during the 2009 Canada Summer Games finished in ninth in the 2007 version of the competition-and hopes to better that finish Saturday. McNeil will compete for the first time at the cross country nationals and isn't concerned about his placement in the field. "It's a really big race with over 200 people, so I'm going to stay with the guys I know run the same pace as me and hope for a good time," McNeil said. "I'm looking to run it (the course) in about 27 minutes or a little bit under." A rookie to event just like McNeil, Annear said she will draw on her past national competition experiences, including the 2009 Canada Games, for inspiration. Annear will be competing in the junior girl's five-kilometre race. "When you compete at big event you get to see some great runners and it makes you aware of how hard you have to train to get to that level," said the Grade 11 Hampton High student. "For me, this is all about the experience. "I just want to do the best I can because I really don't know what to expect." Reprinted from the Telegraph Journal.
