SAINT JOHN - Walker Blizzard has faced charging linebackers and blitzing safeties as an offensive star on the St. Malachy's High School football team. But there's something daunting about his first regional high school track meet.

As a first-year student at St. Mac's, Erin Kelly feels no such trepidation. She's a longtime member of the Saint John Track Club and owns three District 8 middle school records and one provincial middle school record.

They'll join about 350 athletes from 17 schools today at the South-West regional track and field meet at Camp Gagetown in Oromocto, with the top eight in each discipline advancing to the provincial championships next Saturday in Oromocto.

"Everyone has been working really hard at practice and I just hope for some good times and tough competition," said Kelly, who will compete in the 200-metre and 400-m runs as well as discus.

In 2006, Kelly recorded record runs for District 8 in the 200-m with a time of 30:31, the 400-m with a time of 1:06.64 and also the 800-m with a time of 2:49.64. In 2008 she set a provincial record for middle school in the 400-m with a time of 1:04.52.

Blizzard, St. Mac's male athlete of the year, will compete in the 100-m, high jump and long jump.

"I don't really know what to expect, I'm new to this," said Blizzard.

Today could mark the last time he competes at the high school level, but Blizzard is hoping to postpone that by a week.

"Making provincials would be a great way to end my season," he said.

St. Malachy's coach Warren Coombs said it's difficult to predict who will advance to the provincials, as regionals are the first New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association meet of the year.

"The whole team has been working extremely hard during practice but we are still expecting some stiff competition," Coombs said. "We all hope to do well and everyone on this team has the promise to move on."

The North East regional is being held at the Anna Malenfant Track in Dieppe today.
